Let’s be real for a second—most people aren’t models. In fact, when couples first reach out to me about their wedding, elopement, or engagement photos, one of the first things they say is:
“We’re so awkward in front of the camera.”
Sound familiar? If that’s you, you’re not alone. I’d say about 90% of my couples feel that exact way before their session. The good news? You absolutely can look and feel natural during your photoshoot—even if the thought of being photographed makes you squirm.
As a Colorado wedding and elopement photographer, my job isn’t just about pressing the shutter button. It’s about creating a comfortable space where you can relax, be yourself, and actually enjoy the process. And trust me—when you’re having fun, the photos reflect that.

1. FOCUS ON EACH OTHER, NOT THE CAMERA
The best way to forget that I’m there with a camera in hand? Focus on the person you’re with. Whether it’s your fiancé, your partner, your family, or even your dog (yes, pups count as family too), I’ll guide you into natural interactions—walking together, whispering silly things, or just holding hands.
Why it works: When you shift your attention to your person instead of the lens, your body language relaxes and those genuine smiles come out.
How I help: I’ll give you fun little prompts instead of stiff poses, so you end up laughing, moving, and connecting instead of “standing still and smiling.”
2. MOVEMENT IS YOUR BEST FRIEND
Still photos don’t have to mean standing still! Adding movement is one of my favorite tricks to help clients loosen up.
Some of my go-tos:
Walk (or run) toward each other and hug like you haven’t seen each other in weeks.
Slow dance in the middle of a mountain meadow.
Spin around until you laugh so hard you almost fall over.
Pop champagne, twirl your dress, or pick your partner up.
Why it works: Movement takes your mind off “what do I do with my hands?” and creates those candid, in-between moments that feel real.
How I help: I’ll guide you into little mini-adventures—nothing forced, just enough to create natural reactions that translate beautifully into photos.
3. WEAR SOMETHING YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE IN
If you’re constantly adjusting your outfit or stressing about your shoes, that nervous energy shows. Choose clothing that makes you feel like you.
A few tips:
Pick outfits that allow you to move and breathe.
Neutral or earthy tones photograph beautifully outdoors.
Coordinate without matching perfectly.
Bring layers if we’re shooting in the mountains (because Colorado weather likes to keep us guessing!).
How I help: Before your session, I send a style guide with outfit tips and inspiration, and I’m always happy to help you narrow down what works best.
4. TRUST YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER (THAT’S ME!)
This might sound obvious, but it’s a big one. Part of feeling natural in photos is knowing you’re in good hands. I’ll guide you every step of the way, from choosing the best locations and lighting to gently coaching you through each moment.
How I help:
I’ll never leave you hanging wondering what to do.
I give you prompts, direction, and lots of encouragement.
I show you little sneak peeks on the back of the camera so you can see how amazing you actually look.
5. EMBRACE THE AWKWARD
Here’s a secret: sometimes the “awkward” moments are the best ones. That goofy laugh, the scrunched-up nose, or the silly in-between moment often turns into your favorite photo.
Why it works: Authenticity always trumps perfection. You’ll love the photos that feel real, not staged.
How I help: I encourage couples to let go of perfection. If you feel weird, lean into it—we’ll laugh together, and those laughs make magic.
6. THINK OF YOUR SESSION AS AN EXPERIENCE, NOT A PHOTOSHOOT
This isn’t just about taking pictures. It’s about spending time together, exploring beautiful locations, and making memories. When you shift your mindset from “photo session” to “adventure together,” the pressure disappears.
How I help: Whether we’re hiking to Dream Lake at sunrise, popping champagne at Sapphire Point, or dancing in the rain in Rocky Mountain National Park, I make sure the experience is fun, relaxed, and true to who you are.

You don’t need to be a model to look incredible in your photos—you just need to be you. My job as your photographer is to capture the joy, connection, and personality that make your relationship unique. By focusing on each other, adding movement, dressing comfortably, trusting the process, and embracing the real moments, you’ll not only look natural in your photos—you’ll have an amazing time making them.
So if you’ve ever said “we’re so awkward in front of the camera,” I promise—you’re exactly the type of people I love to work with.
